Getting the Most From Your Therapy: A New Book

Dear Readers, I’m sorry I’ve been quiet for a while. The reason is that I’ve been writing a new book, and it’s available now as an e-book on Amazon. It all started with a call from Amy Maclin, editor of “O” Magazine, who suggested an interview for an article on just this topic. The article, “What Your Shrink’s Really Thinking.” is in the February 2016 issue, page 111. We covered many things that can be of help for any therapy, but the conversation got me thinking about how to go even further to help.

Where that led was to a full length book that starts with big questions like,”Do I need therapy,” and “Can I be helped?”  Then it goes to how problems develop and how therapy works to help you trade them in on better ways of living. After that, I look at specific kinds of dysfunctional patterns, so that, working with your therapist, you will be able to understand your own issues as clearly as possible.

I really like the next chapter called, “Befriending the Child Within.” It is about how thinking of your problems as coming from a young you trying his or her best to protect you, leads to the kind of compassion and understanding that are the most effective in promoting healing and growth.

Like very few books you will find, this one is relevant to any therapy, all the way from CBT to psychoanalysis. It shows how the various therapies are really just different ways of accomplishing the same critical jobs. It also introduces the idea of “Modular Therapy.” As we understand better what kind of therapeutic work needs to be done at each step in the treatment, you and your therapist will be able to identify the best tools for that “module” of the overall therapy.

The new e-book is only $2.99 and you can get it for FREE by subscribing to the email list for this blog. I’ll tell you which will be the free days.
