How I became a better teacher and therapist
I decided to become a therapist as a freshman at Stanford, and it's still what I love to do. Like many of us, I was taught fo apply a method (psychodynamic therapy) but soon encountered addiction, where the "neutral" stance didn't work.That and helping trauma survivors got me intensely interested in the mystery of how talk and relationship lead to change.
In my teaching and practice I began to focus on the underlying processes rather than set methods. In 2015, I was "blown away" when, for the first time, the neurophysiology of memory reconsolidation gave a clear explanation of the most dramatic and satisfying experiences of change. As I learned about the precise conditions required for this and other foundational change mechanisms, my therapy got better and I had a rationale for using techniques from different sources.
Since then, I have dedicated my career to helping therapists free themselves from the limitations of "branded" therapies by understanding the universal infrastructure that shows why existing techniques work and helps us match them to clients and fine-tune for better results.
